David Kim, who is in his early thirties now, had developed a love for tutoring children when he was in college. Looking back to these years, he says “Being able to motivate them and relate to them, I saw there was a niche for that type of mentoring and tutoring”. He was still studying at Harvard, when he saw the potential and started his tutoring company, named C2 Education.

David immediately set about hiring tutors for his venture. He developed an intensive screening system that helped him choose the very best talent for his company. His prospective teachers were screened for academic excellence, teaching skills and good character traits. His staff comprises of top graduates and also scientists, who had worked on the Hubble Space Telescope before.

The response to his idea was so overwhelming that he had to expand by offering franchise opportunities in 2001. C2 Education has a total of 112 branches of which 40 are franchises. Kim was also careful in selecting as franchises only those who were really committed to the mission of the company. He was aware of the responsibility of his company to provide qualitative service as they were dealing with the lives and the very futures of the students under their care. This has helped the company to provide an extremely high standard of service, resulting in a large number of elated parents’ advertising for the company by word of mouth. Students have written back to thank the company, for instance, for the jump in their SAT score to over 600 points in certain cases.

David Kim says that his ability in finding the right tutors for his company played a large part in the success his company is experiencing now. He also says that working hard day in and day out is essential to make any business succeed. He places a lot of importance in the relationships with his staff, his students and their parents.

His advice to other entrepreneurs is to get in touch with a chamber of commerce or other support groups, where people can share their experiences and learn from each other. David also admits that he would have started his business much earlier. But however, today every student of the company has surely a success story that reinforces the idea of his own success in the industry.
