Matt Mickiewicz of SitePoint.com – Interview

Angel: Hello Matt,

Thank you very much for agreeing to this interview. To start with, could you give us some background information - Where do you come from? How old are you?

Matt: I was born in Krakow, Poland and immigrated to Canada with my family in 1991. I'm currently 27 years old, having started my first business while still in High School.

Angel: When did you come to the idea of starting SitePoint and what were your goals at the beginning?

Matt: SitePoint is an online resource for web designers and web developers. I started building websites as a hobby in 1997, and I was finding I had to do a great deal of research and legwork to find all the information, tools and resources that I needed. So I started compiling everything I was learning into a simple website created with Microsoft FrontPage, and I launched on April 1st, 1998 as Webmaster-Resources.com. I didn't have any particular goals in mind other than helping as many people as possible by pointing out great resources, reviewing software & books, and sharing my personal website building experiences.

Since that time, SitePoint has blossomed into one of the Top 1000 Websites in the world and
has spawned two new companies: 99designs (crowd sourcing for graphic design) and Flippa.com (auctions for established websites).

Angel: Do you reckon that in the modern economical situation young entrepreneurs like you (started at the age of 15/16 years) would be able to launch their own business and to succeed? What advices would you give to people like these?

Matt: It's easier and cheaper than ever before to launch an Internet business, and yes it’s definitely possible to do it at a young age. The key is to avoid taking the "me too" route and launching a copycat or clone website or web application, and offering a unique and buzz worthy solution to a painful problem. At the end of the day, it all comes down to delivering massive value to others.

Angel: Has age in any way helped/prevented you from achieving your goals?

Matt: Age doesn't really matter all. The best time to start a business is when you're young and you
don't have much... if you get settled into a regular job, get a nice house, get a car lease, are used to regular vacations, and all the conveniences of normal life it'll become too painful to make the sacrifices necessary to bootstrap a new business.

Angel: Does the financial crisis affect your business?

Matt: We shifted our business model from advertising to publishing printed books when the NASDAQ crash happened. We had a thesis that people would pay us for the privilege of providing printed copies of tutorials, so we found a print-on-demand company and turned our most popular article (which was available entire for free) into a $35 book that went on to sell over 20,000 copies. The first edition of the book didn't even have an index and was very hastily put together, but we proved that the idea worked before we had invested a ton of time or money into it.

Angel: What are your future plans for developing?

Matt: Find new and innovative ways of delivering massive value to other people and help them succeed.

Angel: Thank you, Matt. We really appreciate your contribution to BoomPedia.
